In this week’s installment of idiotic fans of the week, we head to New York City and the NHL, where some guy in the crowd decided the best way to celebrate Valentine’s Day was to take his girlfriend to the Rangers-Lightening game. Not only that, but this fan was ready to take a big step in his life and propose to his special lady. So, he thought, what better way to do that than to put a proposal up on the scoreboard? Great idea? Not so much…check out the result below:

This is the risk you take in proposing at a sporting event. It takes a very particular person to want one of the most important moments of their life acted out at a sporting event. So, I’d be pretty sure my significant other was ok with the sporting event proposal before trying it in front of thousands of people– or this might happen to you. Newsflash guys: most women would prefer you propose somewhere besides a hockey game. So for proposing at a Ranger game, this dude is this week’s idiotic fan.

West Virginia fans are insane…and not in the good way. The college basketball fans at the University of West Virginia were already known to be a bit unruly, or at least lacking in a bit of class, before last night’s game against Pitt. That reputation stems from a game earlier this season against Louisville, where the fans started chanting the name of Rick Pitino’s mistress, Karen Sypher, during the game. While that certainly isn’t classy, I think it’s within the realm of acceptable fan behavior. Yeah, it’s rude, but it could be used to rattle Louisville and it’s kinda funny/impressive that the West Va. fans were up on the name of the woman who is the source of Pitino’s legal troubles.

But last night against Pitt, West Virginia fans showed themselves to be insane in a bad, not even a little bit funny sorta way. First, a fan or some fans threw something out of the student section onto the floor. That forced the officials to stop the game to clean the court and coach Bob Huggins got on the stadium speakers to announce the obvious: that throwing stuff on the floor risks injury not just to the other team, but to the West Virginia players as well. After a cheer from the crowd things were ok for a while– until a person in the student section threw a coin which hit a Pitt assistant coach in the head, very close to his eye, which ESPN captured it on tape. On top of all the fan madness, pushing broke out between Pitt and West Virginia players that left an official on the floor getting stepped on while players confronted each other.

Overall, not a great atmosphere for a game, but one which I’m willing to say the crowd set the tone for. It only takes a few idiots to ruin a game, and West Virginia seems to have more than their fair share in the crowd. I’ve sat in many a student section and have never seen anybody throw stuff onto the court/field or attempt to harm the opposing team’s coach. When coach and player safety is at issue, something’s got to change. West Virginia has got to figure out a way to put a muzzle on the crowd, maybe have more security in the student section to throw out egregious fans. It’s unfortunate that it comes to that, but when your fans are certifiably insane it has to be done.

For now I’m interested to see how the Pitt crowd treats West Virginia when they travel to Pittsburgh later this year…

This week’s Idiotic Fans of the Week Award goes to a very worthy recipient: NBA All Star Voters. The starters for the NBA All Star Game are selected entirely through online voting by the fans. As the voting currently stands the NBA’s brilliant online voters have selected some very questionable starters. In the West, Tracy McGrady would currently start even though he has barely played this season, and in the East Allen Iverson would start even though he is averaging under 15 points per game and is clearly on the decline. The problem here is that these two guys are clearly not deserving of an All Star appearance based on merit– rather the only reason they are in contention is because of their previous star power and name recognition.

The purpose of an All Star Game should be to reward the best players in the league in a given season and recognize them. The current online voting system rewards those with name recognition or with fan bases insane enough to keep voting for players regardless of how good they actually are. The All Star game is played each year to honor each year’s best players, it’s not a once in a decade lifetime achievement award.

In response to this problem players like Ray Allen and Chauncey Billups have suggested that players alone should vote for the All Star starters. This doesn’t seem to be an appropriate solution to the problem either: players could theoretically still vote for their buddies and the NBA is in fact financed by the fans, who are the ones who pay for the tickets to see the games. The best way to balance the purpose of the All Star game while giving the fans a say would be to do what the NFL does: count fan votes for 1/3, players 1/3, and coaches 1/3. This will help get the deserving players into the game instead of people like T-Mac and AI.

For now though, well done NBA All Star Voters, you are the idiotic fans of the week.

Although it’s easy fodder, every week the neighborhood will spotlight one particularly egregious moment of fan idiocy per week. This week’s award goes to Philadelphia Eagles fans, who aren’t exactly known as the brightest or least fickle bunch on the fan spectrum.

Why you ask? Well, according to a poll on the Philadelpia Inquirer website, more Eagles fans prefer bringing Michael Vick back to play for the Eagles (33.9%) than Donovan McNabb (32.6%). Now while support for either of these guys isn’t very high and the poll sure isn’t scientific, that the “approval rating” for Donovan McNabb is even low, let alone lower than Michael Vick is about as idiotic as Tiger Woods thinking he could get away with sleeping with 15+ women and never get caught.

Let’s break down the stats this year alone:

McNabb: 3553 yards, 60.3% completions, 22 TDs/10 INTs, 92.5 QB rating, 37 attempts/140 rushing.
Vick: 6/13, 46.2% completions, 1 TD/0 INTs, 93.7 QB rating, 24 attempts/94 yards rushing.

First of all many teams would KILL for a QB with numbers like McNabb’s. Vick on the other hand worked on 37 plays all year for the Eagles and spent all last year in prison. Vick is by no means the dynamic player he was with the Falcons– a dynacism that made up for the fact that he was not an accurate downfield passer (see the career QB rating of 75.9). McNabb on the other hand has been playing at a Pro Bowl level for years. Philly fans have hated McNabb from the time they (once again idiotically) booed him at the NFL Draft. Philly has a bad playoff game this year and suddenly McNabb is done and no one wants him back. Hmm…maybe its because this is coming from a fan base that mercilessly boos their own team at every opportunity and loves the chance to have a knee jerk reaction about something. While McNabb isn’t in his prime anymore, its crazy to think that he isn’t worth bringing back to a team whose offense was clicking during the season in favor of keeping a man who’s been in federal prison for a few years or a QB who played in the run and shoot during college.

Eagles fans, you are the idotic fans of the week. If you don’t want McNabb, I’ve got a bag of magic beans I can trade you for him…
